Taking Stock – July 2024

July is birthday month in our house so there’s usually cake, good food and good times and I’m pleased to report that this year was no exception. In fact, July was a bit of a birthday whirlwind with fun, food, friends and we even squeezed in a little getaway. Here’s a quick look back at the birthday month that was.

Celebrating: All our July birthdays. David’s on the 3rd, I’m on the 9th and Teddy’s on the 14th!

Making: A homemade meat cake for Teddy’s birthday. Can you believe he’s 5?!

Baking: Cat cakes for my neighbour’s birthday – they’re the new cupcakes don’t you know?

Whipping: Up my first ever trifle. Spoiler alert: It won’t be my last!

Trying: To forget the great cake disaster of the failed sausage dog cake I wanted to make for David’s birthday.

Salvaging: David’s birthday cake situation with this random (and very pale) pig cake.

Conceding: Defeat: David wins the Birthday Cake Off 2024 with his scrabble cake!

Eating: Birthday cake for breakfast (but only on birthdays!) It’s tradition.

Wondering: What 53 has in store.

Drinking: Birthday cocktails!

Continuing: My tradition of going for a Chinese on my birthday. Our local is like a throwback to the eighties!

Appreciating: Getting older – it’s a privilege denied to many.

Thinking: We’re scrubbing up quite well for an old pair of 50 somethings!

Posting: The recipe for this Easy Chicken Pot Pie – one of our all time faves.

Creating: This George the Giraffe cake for a friend’s birthday. Yes, another July birthday and another AWW classic!

Joining: Sherry and friends for this month’s In My Kitchen.

Voting: In the general election. Teddy is thinking “why no democracy sausage?!”

Reading: On my kindle.

Rediscovering: My love of reading – situation pleasing.

Starting: Happy Place by Emily Henry. I’m all about the 99p Kindle books!

Finishing: One Day by David Nicholls – I loved it just as much as the Netflix series, if not more!

Plodding: Away with my German on Duolingo.

Watching: The Man with the 1000 Kids on Netflix. Bonkers!

Seeing: Battle Proms at Burghley House. It was fab, especially loved the Red Arrows and the fireworks.

Sharing: Where to eat, drink and stay in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Having: A girls day in London town with my old friends of 30 years. Eeep!

Escaping: To the seaside to the beautiful town of Rye. Shame about the weather!

Enjoying: Some quality beach time at Camber Sands.

Liking: Days that are sunny enough for the beer garden.

Disliking: Grey days – there have been too many of them!

Getting: My hair did. I feel like a new woman!

Opening: Birthday cards and presents – I’m feeling very loved.

Missing: My mum on what would be her 81st birthday. Yes, she’s a July baby too.

Remembering: My mum every day but especially on the 11th, her birthday. She always used to tell me I was her early birthday present.

Catching: Up with my dear friend Alana and her mum from Sydney.

Hoping: For some warmer weather in August but not too warm!

Looking: Up and seeing beautiful blue skies.

Phew! I need a lie down after all that!

When is your birthday? Have you ever made an AWW birthday cake?
